Common Questions

BESS2 is a rebate activity under the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS), a government-backed program designed to reduce pressure on the electricity grid during peak periods. When you connect your home battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant like Discover Energy's, your battery generates Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs) each time it discharges stored energy during high-demand periods (typically 2:30pm–8:30pm AEDT, October to March). An Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) then trades these PRCs on your behalf, and the financial value, typically $36-60 per kWh of usable battery capacity, is passed directly back to you as an upfront payment. It's a real, government-supported incentive that rewards NSW households for helping stabilise the grid with clean, stored energy.

Discover Energy cannot guarantee a reserve, we aim to leave 30% of energy stored in the battery but this may vary depending on the amount of energy being consumed at the premises at the time of the export.

Your battery must be between 20 and 28kWh capacity and compatible with the Discover Energy VPP platform. We work with brands including FoxESS, Solis, Alpha ESS, AISWEI, and Bytewatt. Contact our team to check your specific model.

You'll need a Discover Energy electricity plan to participate in the VPP. If you're with another retailer, you can easily switch and we'll handle the transfer. New customers also receive the $200 sign-up credit.

A BESS2 Nomination Form allows you to nominate an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) to act as the Capacity Holder for your residential battery under the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS). Signing the form authorises the ACP to create and trade Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs) on your behalf when your battery is enrolled in an eligible Virtual Power Plant (VPP). You need to nominate both the ACP and the VPP Operator on your form.

Yes. The BESS2 VPP incentive under NSW PDRS can be combined with the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program (CHBP) for eligible new installations. This "double dip" means you can receive both federal hardware discounts and state VPP income. Ask our team for the latest details.
